Glossary terms for letter 'g'

Gabion A series of wire baskets filled with stones and used as a retaining wall. Landscape Architects & Designers

Gable Carpentry The triangular junction of an external wall and a pitched roof. Carpenters & Joiners

Garage Design An enclosed structure for the storage of motor vehicles.

Gauge A height measurement for each course of brickwork. In which courses of bricks are marked out set “to gauge”.

General Purpose Outlet (GPO) An electric socket outlet. Also known as ‘Power Point’. Electricians & Electrical Contractors

Glass Block A rectangular or square hollow block made of glass. Glass Fitters & Glaziers

Glazed Panel Door A timber framed door containing a number of glazed panels. Glass Fitters & Glaziers

Grade To shape the ground surface by machinery.

Granny Flat A self-contained section of a house, designed for an aged person.

Gravel Fill Crushed rock or rubble used for drainage to remove surface or groundwater. Plumbers & Gasfitters

Ground Level The line of the finished surface level adjacent to a building. Building Surveyors

Groundwater Underground water occurring naturally.

Grout A mixture of cement and water. Concreters

Grubbing The hand cleaning of mechanically excavated trenches, usually to remove vegetation roots and debris from the trenches. Excavating & Earth Moving Contractors

Gutter (Roof) A channel for the collecting and discharge of rainwater. Gutter Installation, Protection and Repair, Plumbers & Gasfitters
